Damaschino

The Damaschino vine has ancient origins in Sicily, even if the name could refer to the city of Damascus, and therefore would suggest a Syrian origin. It is hypothesized that it arrived in Sicily, and in particular in the area of Trapani, during the Arab domination. For the first time this vine was mentioned in 1868 by the Mendola, a well-known agri-ampelographer. Damaschino was used in the reconstruction of the vineyards of the Marsalese area affected by phylloxera, and its wine was particularly sought after as an ideal match with fish dishes. Later the Damaschino was gradually replaced by the Catarratto, more resistant to the peronospora and the rot. However we find it again among the vines suitable for the production of Marsala DOC.
