Marsala

The most acclaimed version of the birth of Marsala wine as a liqueur wine (or fortified wine) is centered on the figure of British merchant John Woodhouse, who in 1773 landed with the ship he was traveling to in the port of Marsala. According to tradition, during the park he had the opportunity to taste, along with the rest of the crew, the wine produced in the area, aged in oak barrels, with a similar taste to the Spanish and Portuguese wines widespread at that time in England.
